All signs point to Rotherwas Chapel as new 1km Trail takes shape

A project dreamed up by local historian Barbara Ferris became a reality in June 2026, thanks to Wye Valley Group.

Barbara, who is passionate about promoting Rotherwas’ rich heritage, was the driving force behind a new 1km self-guided walking trail from Warehouse 701 to Rotherwas Chapel. The route takes in a lake created by the Bodenham family and restored by WV Group six years ago, along with gravestones from the family’s private burial ground. Wye Valley Group also produced a tri-fold map, available at Warehouse 701, and installed marker signs along the trail.

The walk leads to Rotherwas Chapel, built by Sir Roger Bodenham from 1583 on the site of a possible earlier medieval chapel. Barbara’s daughters, Nic and Eleanor, recently tested the trail, much to the delight of Barbara’s friends visiting from Australia.

A key to the chapel is available from Warehouse 701 for anyone wishing to explore the route and visit the chapel, which is maintained by English Heritage.
